Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look and is safe to use. Whitening lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discolouration without removing any of the tooth surface.

Stellenbosch Dental Studio offers professional teeth whitening options to suit every timeframe and budget. We consult with each patient to identify their specific needs so that you can safely rely on a whiter, brighter smile.

Ask our opinion about your teeth whitening options before you start treatment.

What are the benefits of teeth whitening?

  • Safe, short and simple procedure

  • Immediate significant results with improvement by an average of eight shades

  • With regular maintenance, results are long-lasting

  • Low sensitivity

How long does teeth whitening last and/or be repeated?

The effects of teeth whitening may last between 18 months to three years, depending on your lifestyle and diet and will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth.

Whitening need to be repeated from time to time if you want to maintain the brighter colour.

Which teeth whitening treatment is best for me?

Stellenbosch Dental Studio offers two types of teeth whitening procedures, which are in-clinic teeth bleaching and take-home bleaching. A combination of in-clinic and take home whitening generally achieves the best and longest-lasting results.

4 Easy Steps to Whiter Teeth

Zoom Whitening is an in-office bleaching process that is widely known for its ability to quickly brighten teeth from the effects of discolouration.

Prior to treatment your dentists will:

  • Examine your teeth to determine if you have gum disease, exposed roots, cavities, crooked teeth, gum recession, or other untreated issues as whitening most likely won’t take on damaged teeth

  • Cleaning your teeth to remove the film of bacteria, food and other substances that build up on your teeth and contribute to the staining

This safe, effective bleaching treatmenttakes about one hour and involves 4 x repetitions of the following steps:

  1. Zoom! Whitening gel is applied to your teeth.

  2. A slightly heated lamp is shone into your mouth for 15 minutes, during which time you can relax

  3. The light activates the ingredients in the gel, penetrating the teeth and bleaching away the discoloration, without harming your teeth’s structure.

  4. After 15 minutes, rinse!

Zoom! takes much less time than at-home kits and toothpastes, and makes your teeth an average of 2-4 shades lighter.

You'll see immediate results that last longer.

What causes teeth to stain?

Teeth whitening is most effective on surface (extrinsic) stains. The most common reasons for teeth to get yellow or stained are:

  • Not everyone has brilliant white teeth

  • Discolouration as you age

  • Food and dark-coloured liquids drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and blackcurrant

  • Use of tobacco

  • Not taking good care of your teeth

It is also possible to have stains inside the tooth, called intrinsic stains.

The most common causes of intrinsic stains are:

  • Exposure to too much fluoride as a child while teeth are developing

  • Tetracycline antibiotics if taken by: a mother during the second half of pregnancy it can stain the child's teeth or by a child who is 8 years or younger

  • Trauma

What are the side effects of teeth whitening?

The process is normally painless. A very small percentage may experience a minor, dull ache following the procedure and sensitivity in the 24 hours after your teeth have been exposed to whitening gel.It is best to avoid very hot or cold drinks for the first 24 hours tooth sensitivity is experienced.

When might teeth whitening not work?

Teeth whitening can only lighten your existing tooth colour and only works on natural teeth. It will not work on any types of ‘false' teeth such as dentures, crowns and veneers. If your dentures are stained or discoloured visit your dental team and ask for them to be cleaned.
