Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that is very effective in protecting teeth from decay. It is a naturally occurring substance that is absorbed from water and from different foodstuffs.

The incorporation of fluoride into tooth structure is especially important during the phases when tooth development is taking place i.e. from birth when the primary teeth are mineralising to approximately 12 years of age when the permanent teeth have developed. When a child’s teeth are still forming, fluoride works by making tooth enamel more resistant to the acid that causes tooth decay.

South Africa’s water supplies are not fluoridated. In Cape Town, the levels of fluoride in the water are much lower than the optimal level required to prevent the formation of cavities.

It is important for children to get some systemic fluoride to help developing teeth grow strong and healthy, especially children living in non-fluoridated communities, such as Cape Town and surrounding areas. At Stellenbosch Dental Studio, all children are administered topical fluoride bi-annually at their cleaning visit.

Contact Stellenbosch Dental Studio now for an appointment to review the fluoride status of your child’s teeth and offer an appropriate recommendation.
