Fissure Sealants

Deep pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back tether termed ‘fissures’ and are usually so narrow that toothbrush bristles and streams of water are not able to clean them effectively. These form a favourable environment for bacteria to flourish, often resulting in tooth decay.

What can be done?

Fissure sealants can be effectively applied to children as well as adults’ teeth. They are thin, invisible plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces to keep bacteria and food debris away from the grooves thereby helping to protect them against tooth decay.Dental sealants are commonly used on the back teeth or second molars, where decay frequently occurs.

What does the sealant application involve?

It is a simple and pain-free procedure – no drilling or removal of tooth structure is necessary. The tooth is properly cleaned, treated, dried and the sealant applied. Initially applied in liquid form, the sealant flows into the pits and fissures of the teeth’s chewing surfaces. Finally, a high intensity curing light is used to harden the fissure sealant into a plastic coating. It takes a few minutes for each tooth to set. Once it does, the invisible cover immediately offers round-the-clock protection against dental caries and cavities.

How effective are sealants and how long can they last?

Many studies show sealants to be very effective in preventing decay in fissures and that a properly placed sealant will last as long as a typical amalgam filling. Even if a sealant is damaged or lost, it is easily repaired and replaced. Regular maintenance by your dentist will help them last. This can be done with your six-monthly check-up.

When should sealants be put on the teeth?

Sealants are most effective when applied after the eruption of the tooth. Early application ensures pits and fissures are sealed before the decay process begins.

Despite the immense benefits, Fissure Sealants should never be seen as a replacement for regular brushing, flossing or dental visits.
